A Short Biography of St. Francis of Assisi
Saint Francis of Assisi known as Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, or named as Francesco by his father, was born on 1181/1182. He founded the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women’s Order of St. Clare, the  Third Order of St. Francis for men and women not able to live the lives of itinerant preachers, followed by the early members of the Order of Friars Minor, or the monastic lives of the Poor Clares.

Francis’ father was Pietro di Bernardone, a prosperous silk merchant. Francis lived the high-spirited life typical of a wealthy young man, even fighting as a soldier for Assisi. going off to war in 1204, Francis had a vision that directed him back to Assisi, where he lost his taste for his worldly life. On a pilgrimage to Rome, he joined the poor in begging at St. Peter's Basilica. The experience moved him to live in poverty. Francis returned home, began preaching on the streets, and soon gathered followers. His Order was authorized by Pope Innocent III in 1210. He then founded the Order of Poor Clares, which became an Enclosed religious order for women, as well as the Order of Brothers and Sisters of Penance (commonly called the Third Order).

In 1219, he went to Egypt in an attempt to convert the Sultan to put an end to the conflict of the Crusader. By this point, the Franciscan Order had grown to such an extent that its primitive organizational structure was no longer sufficient. He returned to Italy to organize the Order. Once his community was authorized by the Pope, he withdrew increasingly from external affairs. In 1223, Francis arranged for the first Christmas Nativity Scene. In 1224, he received the Stigmata, making him the first recorded person to bear the wounds of Christ's Passion. He died during the evening hours of October 3, 1226, while listening to a reading he had requested of Ps. 142 (141).

On July 16, 1228, he was proclaimed a saint by Pope Gregory IX. He is known as the Patron Saint of animals and the Environment, and is one of the two patron saints of Italy (with Catherine of Siena). It is customary for Catholic and Anglican churches to hold ceremonies blessing animals on his Feast Day of October 4. He is also known for his love of the Eucharist, his sorrow during the Stations of the Cross, and for the creation of the Christmas crèche or  Nativity Scene.

Sexual Violence and Causes of Rape: A Talk by Prof. Dr. Michael E. Jones

Prof. Michael E. Jones addressing

Prof. Dr. Michael E. Jones, a research scholar from USA, addressed the staff, students and neighbouring communities in SAC Auditorium on Sunday, 11th January 2015 at 6 pm., on the topic “Sexual Violence and reasons that lead to Rape.”

Sexual Revolution took place in America in 1970’s and it is being happening now in India. India the advent of sexual revolution was in late 90’s. Films, adds, TV shows, porn media, etc, increased the sexual violence in the country. When a person releases the sexual passions it creates monster in him/her. There are two cultures amongst us: City of God and City of Man. City of God is full of love of God. It is full of service. There is a bloodshed here, but the bloodshed gives eternal life.  On the other hand, City of Man is dominated by Libido dominandi. It also sheds blood, but the bloodshed here makes the person a vampires. If you want eternal life, practice moral life and if you want to be otherwise be a vampire.

Pornography is not the issue of freedom, but it is a weapon of war. It diverts the attention of youth and enslaves them. It should be noted that the power of a country is in youth. It is the duty of the priests and religious to uphold moral values in schools and institutions and teach the people not to be carried away with negativity.

RĀVAN TUM BĀHAR ĀVO

A two-act Hindi play, “Rāvan tum bāhar āvo” was enacted in St. Albert’s College Ranchi on 3rd and 4th November by the third year philosophers. The title itself is self-sufficient to give the crux of the drama. The issue of the drama is a socio-political one. The deteriorating social values, rampant corruption in the socio-political situation and the unquenching thirst to amass wealth by the political leaders are the key issue in the drama. It is unbelievable that the values cherished and taught by the people Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose, Chandrashedkhar and Bhagat Singh have no effect in our society at all. There is degradation of values in every sphere: society, religion, law, administration, education, health, culture, commerce, trade and more importantly the politics.

Leaders have misused their power and amassed the wealth. Disproportionate Asset cases are worthy to be noted here. In their love for money, the poor have become scapegoats. This even has put the honest people (including some honest leaders) into shame. Is it not a national shame?!

Rāvan tum bāhar āvo is enactment of this story. It is a story of a King Veersena who in spite of being a corrupt leader wants to be called a deśbhakt, a patriot. It is not only the king who is corrupt, but also the people who are associated with him in governance.

The author of the drama is Shankar Puntambekar is praiseworthy for having written and published such a reverberating social piece. Hats off to him. The drama was directed by Frs. Deepak Tauro, David Bara and Bhushan Bara.
